Description
Iris versicolor, commonly called Harlequin Blue Flag Iris, is a clump forming North American native iris that prefers life on the wet side, which makes it a perfect choice for the edge of the pond or in other moisture retentive sites where it forms upright clumps of attractive, sword-shaped, blue green leaves. In late spring to early simmer pretty irises 4 inches across are perched atop sturdy stalks that rise above the foliage. The flowers are variably colored blue to lavender and purple with yellow splotches, white markings and striking veins. One of those plants you’ll always look forward to see it come into bloom.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Harlequin Blue Flag Iris is ideal for growing in moisture retentive soil at the edges of ponds, marshy areas or anywhere else where the soil stays moist to wet. It can be grown in a pot that is submerged up to 4 in under the water surface in garden ponds. A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens, and yellow color theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
The Harlequin Blue Flag Iris is very easy to grow in a consistently moist to even wet soil and full sun to part shade. It will grow in up to 4 inches of standing water. You might be happy to know that this native Iris does not appear on any state or national invasive species list.Â

I could not be happier that I found Wilson Bros. Gardens. I live in rural WV and we don’t have a lot of interesting choices for plants. I bought my 70-year old home a few years ago, and wanted to honor the cottage-bungalow feel with colorful perennials. I look forward to the weekly e-mails with gorgeous pictures, and have found the Advice section helpful and inspiring!
I purchased two Blue Flag irises for the front of my house and they arrived in perfect, flowering condition. I planted soon after and they’re thriving. I’ve received several compliments about them; they look incredibly healthy.
I will continue to purchase from Wilson Bros Gardens – I’m a big fan of the quality & selection!——————————————————Thanks for the photo! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
