Description
From early summer to mid fall, the ‘Mellow Yellows’ Coneflower is floriferous native beauty that will display abundant large coneflowers ranging in mellow shades of gold, yellow, cream, apricot and peach shades. It almost seems as no two flowers are identical shades. The butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will enjoy them as well. Excellent for cutting, the flowers are held and shown off on sturdy stems that rise to 30 inches high above a mound of dark green foliage. Towards the end of the flowering season make sure to leave some spent flowers on the plant as the birds love their seeds. Easy to grow, drought and cold tolerant to -40F, and deer and rabbit resistant, Mellow Yellows will not disappoint!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 30 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide, the Mellow Yellows Coneflower is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and large mixed container gardens or in groupings in sunny landscape, woodland and perennial borders. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, bird gardens, cut flower gardens, and cottage gardens and native and wildflower gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 24 inches apart for mass plantingsÂ
Growing Preferences
Mellow Yellows Coneflower is very easy to grow in most any well-drained but moist soil in full sun or part shade. Provide at least 5 hours of direct sun for best flowering. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. No deadheading necessary though doing so will encourage more growth and flowers. Feed in spring with a good flower food or organic plant food.
